Last year, we published in Translational Vision Science and Technology an article1 providing a detailed catalog of 1562 international patent applications published in 2022 by the World International Patent Office that were identified as being related to the field of vision science. Given the emphasis by Translational Vision Science and Technology on translational science and technology, it was hoped that its readers would especially benefit from seeing these international patents relevant to their work identified and collected together in one place. It has been gratifying to find that the article has been viewed and downloaded at approximately twice the rate of the average 2023 Translational Vision Science and Technology article. This encourages us to proceed with the plan stated in the first article to publish annual updates.
As in the previous article, due to its size, the catalog is presented as a Supplementary Excel file, which allows it to be downloaded and readily searched, sorted, or filtered within Excel. Fields include titles, abstracts, and thumbnail images for each of the identified 1475 international patents, as well as International Patent Classification class and group descriptions and patent application and publication dates.
We present below updates based on the new data of the two figures we published last year. Figure 1 shows the number of ophthalmology-related applications by the top 20 applicants, and Figure 2 shows how those applications are distributed across technical fields for those top applicants.
